Las Vegas local Elmer Sherwin got lucky twice. Las Vegas opened its first casino in 1989 with the Mirage Hotel Casino. Retirement resident Sherwin decided to go and see what the new casino was all about. Having spent $80 of his own money on the Megabucks slots, the 76-year-old snagged $20 of coins from his former wife. In a matter of minutes, he won $4.6 million. It was Las Vegas’ largest slots jackpot at the time.
Time travel 16 years forward to September 16, 2005, when we hopped into the DeLorean. Sherwin is 92 years old and still enjoying life in Las Vegas; enjoying the free drinks and buffets offered at the off-strip casinos.
It’s time for him to spin the Megabucks slot machine once again. Once again, he succeeds. With this win, Sherwin pockets a whopping $21.1 million. His family and charitable causes received most of the money. As soon as Sherwin won his second race, he announced that he would try his best to win three races in a row. Sadly, he died in 2007 at age 93. Las Vegas has never seen a better inning from one of its luckiest residents.
